A whodunit (sometimes spelled who-done-it) is a genre of mystery story where the main focus is on figuring out who committed a particular crime, usually a murder. The term is a playful contraction of “who done it?”

In these stories, a detective, investigator, or sometimes even an amateur sleuth tries to piece together clues, interrogate suspects, and solve the mystery of “who did it.” Classic examples include many Agatha Christie novels like Murder on the Orient Express or Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories. The fun lies in following along with the investigation and trying to guess the culprit before the big reveal at the end.
